RULE THE ROOST AT YOUR NEXT COOKOUT WITH THESE 5 STRAWBERRY COCKTAILS

Strawberry picking season is in full force, but it won’t be here long. It usually only lasts for about 3 weeks in June. Now is the perfect time to stock up on strawberries for the summer, you’re going to need them! Don’t be afraid to overload because you can always store them in the freezer. They are going to be the key ingredient to creating a refreshing and thirst-quenching summer cocktail. We’ve scouted a few recipes to introduce to friends at cookouts, picnics, and pool parties.

1. STRAWBERRY-BOURBON BASIL LEMONADE

  • 1 pound of strawberries, top removed and halved
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of bourbon
  • 1 cup of ice-cold water
  • 1/2 cup (about 3 lemons) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 oz bitters
  • 12 (or up to 18, if desired) basil leaves, chopped and slightly smashed

Place strawberries and a 1/4 cup water in a blender or food processor, and pulse until puréed.

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add strawberry purée and 1 3/4 cups water,
and heat until mixture just begins to boil, about 5 to 10 minutes. Add sugar and stir until dissolved.

Remove from heat and allow to cool completely, about 30 minutes.
Strain through a fine mesh sieve and discard solids. Chill syrup at least 1 hour.

In a large pitcher, combine syrup, bourbon, water, lemon juice, and bitters; stir for 1 minute.
Add basil, and stir to combine. Strain into 8 tall glasses filled with ice.

Garnish each glass with a basil sprig.

2. STRAWBERRY BASIL MARGARITA

  • 16 medium strawberries
  • 12 basil leaves
  • 2 oz simple syrup (make using 1/2 sugar, 1/2 cup water – heat until sugar has
    dissolved and then cool. Refrigerate leftovers)
  • 2 oz lime juice
  • 2 oz lemon juice
  • 8 oz Reposado tequila
  • 2 oz orange liqueur
  • additional strawberries, lime slices, and basil leaves for garnish

Halve the strawberries and put into a pitcher. Muddle the strawberries, basil, simple syrup,
lime juice and lemon juice together.

Add ice, Tequila, Orange Liqueur and stir until mixed evenly.

Use a fresh strawberry to moisten rim of glass and dip into half salt / half sugar mixture.
Fill glass with ice and garnish with basil leaf and strawberry on rim.

3. STRAWBERRY MOJITO

  • 11 oz of strawberries, hulled (about 3 cups)
  • 1/3 cup of fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 10 large fresh mint leaves
  • 1 cup of white or amber rum
  • 1 cup seltzer

In a medium pitcher, combine the strawberries, lime juice, sugar, and mint leaves and
crush with a muddler or wooden spoon until the sugar is dissolved, about 1 minute.
Add the rum and stir gently.

Fill 4 rocks glasses three-quarters full with ice, divide the mojito among them, and
top each with about 1/4 cup seltzer. Garnish with mint sprigs, lime wedges, or strawberries.

4. STRAWBERRY GIN SMASH

  • 1 lb of fresh strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 limes, juiced, about 4 tablespoons
  • 2 cups gin
  • 3 cups club soda
  • fresh mint sprigs, to garnish

Muddle the sugar and limes in a pitcher that holds at least 8 cups (64 ounces).
Set aside 6 to 8 small strawberries and make a small slice in their tips.
Hull and slice the remaining strawberries and muddle the slices lightly
with the sugar and lime juice.

Stir in the gin and club soda and pack the pitcher full of ice. Add mint sprigs to garnish.
Pour into ice-filled glasses and garnish with a strawberry, slotted onto the edge of the glass.

5. STRAWBERRY BEER LEMONADE

  • 2 cups of strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1/2 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 large bottle of blonde or pale ale (1 pint, 6 oz)
  • ice or frozen strawberries

Add the berries, sugar and lemon juice to a pitcher. Allow to stand at room
temperature for 10 minutes for the sugar to dissolve and the berries to begin
to break down. Add the beer and ice and stir to combine.
Adjust the lemon and sugar to your taste.

These are just a few recipes to help you kick off summer 2015. You never know when your friends will designate you with the job of drink prep and strawberry cocktails are a summertime favorite.
